One of the cool things I get to do as part of my job is talk to leading vendors in the world of enterprise mobility. That’s not only very fun and enjoyable, but a great way for me to learn about their future plans and see what their thoughts are around the enterprise mobility space.
What excites me most however, is when I get to learn from IT and Line of Business decision makers – the ones who are actually using the “stuff” (that’s the technical term).
I get to do that two ways: 1) from the research I conduct; and 2) through the real discussions I have with the CIOs, CTOs, IT managers and end users who are in the trenches, struggling with this “stuff” (see, I said it again) day in and day out.
One of the things people keep hearing me harp on about (and we know I can harp on!) on my soap box is the need for mobility management and Business and IT policies specifically tailored for mobility. Well, the fact of the matter is, less than half of companies I surveyed have a mobility policy in place. Then, when I talk to companies and they share with me what they actually include in their policy, it becomes pretty evident that they are struggling with a detailed policy document that they can track and enforce. Heck, there are also a large number of companies I talk to that just say “Philippe, I know my company needs this. I need to do this, but I honestly don’t even know where the hell to begin. What mobility policies do I need to have in place???”
To quote Scooby Doo: “Ruh Roh.”
And hence where we are today. Enter The Enterprise Mobility Policy Guidebook: Business Policy Edition. I’ve been working for the last few weeks with Visage Mobile to develop a mobility policy tool for companies who are looking to develop from scratch or enhance their mobility policy document…and hopefully make it something that doesn’t just get shoved in the HR drawer with all the other policy guides that haven’t been updated since the pre-Mesozoic age.
My hope is that companies will use this as a tool to provide some real guidelines to help the IT department AS WELL AS END USERS get the most out of their mobility investments. It covers:
- General Mobility Guidelines
- Non-Compliance Repercussions
- Mobile Devices & Accessories
- Handset Features and Services
- Wireless Carriers and Plans
- Wireless Features & Mobile Applications
- Mobile Security
