There's nothing like having a few days of holiday cheer, some great college football and too much turkey to get one thinking about all we should be thankful for in the world of enterprise mobility. I took these last couple of days to reflect on some of the key issues that we are facing in our industry, including the issues related to managing and securing the iPhone.
Hey, I never said I had a *real* life. Actually, I did take time to catch up on some reading that included some Melville and Shakespeare, which of course, is the inspiration for the title of today's entry.

Today is Thanksgiving here in the United States. It's supposed to be a day off, yet somehow I found myself in front of the computer most of the day playing catch up on various things. In any case, seeing how I have been playing catch up, and it's actually time for me to enjoy this wonderful holiday with my family, Let me leave you all with a piece I recently penned on the importance of secuirty in the context of enterprise mobility. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Welcome to the Thanksgiving edition of Inside Looking Out. I can't believe I just wrote that...2009 has just flown by! In any case, this past week, I spoke with Vivek Thomas, CEO of Maximizer Software, a Vancouver, BC based CRM software house.
I first spoke with Vivek a few weeks ago when I was introduced to his company's mobile CRM application. I really enjoyed speaking to him to get a sense of how he feels mobility is evolving. We decided to sit down last week and have him be interviewed by yours truly.

While I was at the Mobile Business Conference at Interop, I did my usual networking. A great way to do that is to attend the panels that have "people of interest" and introduce yourself after they are done speaking. There were many people I wanted to introduce myself to this year, including a representative from Samsung...you know, the folks who recently announced a new smartphone OS.
You can see after the jump what I recently penned for FierceMobileIT on Bada.

Hello from somewhere near Stratford Connecticut. I am on the Acela Express, you know the train known in other parts of the world as the TGV that takes 3h45 to get to NYC from Boston. Did you know that the very same train will go from Paris to Bruxelles (same distance) in 75 minutes? Go Amtrak! The good news is that the extra 150 minutes afford me the opportunity to reflect on today’s sessions and some of the meetings I had with enterprise mobility vendors.

Hello from the 48th floor of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. What a truly amazing view of the New York City skyline from this location. Today was an incredibly wonderful, albeit hectic day. While it was filled with both planned and unplanned meetings, I knew it was going to be a great day by the time I met with the participants of the opening keynote panel I was moderating at the Mobile Business Conference at Interop.

Hello from New York City and the Mobile Business Expo conference! As you might know, I interviewed Russ McGuire from Sprint for the Inside Looking Out Series a couple of weeks ago. If you’re not already checking out his blog on a (at least semi) regular basis, then let me tell you that you should.
One of his most recent entries was, candidly, one of the most refreshing carrier perspectives I have seen in a long time.

Welcome to the latest edition of Inside Looking Out. This past week, I spoke with Lee Williams. As the Executive Director for The Symbian Foundation, Lee needs no introduction. Lee has been in tech and mobility for a long time now, having also spent time at companies like Be, Palm and Nokia before joining Symbian.
I first spoke with Lee a few weeks ago when he was doing a whirlwind tour of the US right before the Symbian Exchange and Expo. I do not envy that travel schedule. We followed up that meeting this past week with a phone chat. If you saw a recent interview he gave, you'll get a sense of how the conversation went.

Wow. Time flies when you're having fun. With all the rumors in the last couple of days that Nokia is interested in Palm (again), I decided to look back on the last time I commented on this type of rumor.
June 15, 2009. That's five months, almost to the day, since I last wrote about this. The last time this rumor was flying around, it was about Dell. This time, the Nokia rumors are making me think of a Guns N' Roses song where W. Axl Rose says during the chorus "Sometimes I feel like I'm beating a ..."

Enterprise mobility has a lot of hot topics these days: iPhone, Android, the rebirth of Company X and the impending death of Company Y...you know, all the hype that's out there these days. One of the topics that is of great interest to me, that doesn't seem to get as many headlines is the issue of liability. Should mobile devices be corporate liable or individually liable? Who should pay for the mobile? The employer or the employee? What are the pros and cons of each approach?
I'm starting to ask myself if it actually matters.
