What a crazy week. Between client calls, internal meetings, a horrible round of golf and finishing up some projects, I have not had the chance to write some thoughts I have had percolating in my brain. The web is all a twitter (can I say that now?) with the news that the FCC will be investigating the carriers with regards to their practices around device exclusivity. I think they should be looking well beyond the carriers.

Welcome to the latest edition of Inside Looking Out. This past week, I spoke with Mark Gentile. Mark, who founded his company in 1996 is the President and CEO of Odyssey Software.
I've had the opportunity in the past to speak to Mark a number of times regarding mobile device management and enterprise mobility management in general. He had a LOT to share with me this past week. I think you'll enjoy the recap.

Today, our good friends in Waterloo announced their intention to acquire Torch Mobile, makers of the Iris Browser, a browser based upon the open source WebKit rendering engine.
Now mind you, I was debating whether or not the title of this piece should be "Holy Acquisition Batman!" but decided maybe it wasn't worthy of such a "bombastic" title. Or is it?

Some of you may know that I am now penning a column for the cool people over at FierceMobileIT. The first article I penned was with my friend David Goldschlag, CTO of Trust Digital where we talked about the need for enterprise app stores.
The latest article was posted earlier this week, but for those of you who may not be following FierceMobileIT, it's on the topic of GRC: Governance, Risk and Compliance. All I can say is, if your company (either as a user or vendor of mobility solutions) isn't thinking about GRC, well you should start doing so.
A copy of the article is available after the jump.

I saw this interesting article/blog post this morning on Information Week's website about rumors of Microsoft planning a dual OS strategy for Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7 which came on the heels of this article on News.com regarding what Microsoft needs to do to get back into the mobile game.
Argh, the much maligned OS is still making news and press, but candidly with more questions than answers. Let me offer one very simple suggestion....especially for those of you with great taste in music. Think of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss. That's right my Redmondian friends: KISS.

(Editor's note: Internet access issues delayed this posting...my apologies) Welcome to the latest edition of Inside Looking Out. This past week, I spoke with Chris Allsup. Chris is a real thought leader in the mobility management space. Chris was a Co-Founder and Director of Global Business Development at Perlego Systems. Prior to that, he was a management consultant and held operational roles in high growth technology companies. Chris is now evaluating opportunities in technology and mobility. For better or worse (for him) I also consider Chris a good friend.

As you might know, I sit on the Editorial Advisory Board of Mobile Enterprise Magazine. The website gets a lot of updates with cool content from a wide variety of sources (major kudos to the editorial staff), including research houses, such as yours truly and others. I saw an article on wireless security that caught my eye, only to be (somewhat) disappointed that it was more focused on WLAN security than mobile security. (It was a good read by the way)
Now don't get me wrong, I used to cover that space and think it's still a critical piece of the WLAN equation...however, it did make me start thinking more about MOBILE security and what's included in it and what should (or should not) be.

In the words of the great thespian Keanu Reeves, "Whoa..." So today, Microsoft and Nokia, two of the mega powerhouses in the world of mobility announced a deal where the two companies will work closely together to develop Symbian versions of the venerable Office application suite, as well as Office Communicator Mobile, and provide tie-ins for SharePoint, System Center and continue the support of the ActiveSync protocol.
The announcement and ensuing discussion was quite interesting, but my jaw hit the floor around 49 seconds into the conversation.

Welcome to the latest edition of Inside Looking Out. This past week, I spoke with Bob Tinker, President and CEO of MobileIron. Never heard of MobileIron? Well you should.
I met Bob and his team on my trip out to the west coast a month ago. At that stage, the company was still in stealth mode, but was able to share with me their pretty interesting vision. Last week, MobileIron officially joined the EMM party. In between events, I was able to catch Bob on the phone.

Here we go again. I haven't had one of these in ages - in fact since February of this year. I was hoping there would be less of these over time. Sure, there are people out there who are going to say how the iPhone is enterprise ready, but that doesn't count. "We" know better than to say such outlandish things - we know that the iPhone has a role in the enterprise but that it still needs better management capabilities. It needs to have the kinds of capabilities that are available for BlackBerry or Windows Mobile. Too bad someone (else) thinks Microsoft is going to give up on Windows Mobile within two years. Time to pass the crack pipe!
