I know this sounds like an odd title for a blog post on THIS site, but let me give you some context. I was speaking to a company last week for a briefing. They were incredibly patient with me because I was hacking up a lung while dealing with the flu that has been going around. They were telling me about some new product announcements, as well as some of the progress they had been making in the market. They were also telling me how this played into their overall vision for enterprise mobility.
I stopped and asked them...so are you sure you are in the enterprise mobility space?

Hello from CTIA Fall 2008. Unlike previous times I have attended this type of show, I have actually carved out some time to walk the show floor to get a feel for the buzz on the floor. There's a fair bit of talk about mobile advertising and other social networking and consumer related mobility initiatives, but that doesn't do much to get my enterprise mobility juices flowing. I guess if anything, it gives me the time to share my views on the recently announced Palm Treo Pro.

As everyone knows, Steve Jobs announced on Monday the iPhone 3G, set to be available July 11. I have written in the past that I have a lot of concerns regarding the viability of the device in the enterprise. However, the new device is quite compelling: updated OS, 3G, GPS, ActiveSync and Cisco VPN just to name a few of the new upgrades - all with a lower (subsidized) price. Yesterday, I had the pleasure to meet Mary Cronin from Code Spotter. Mary also teaches some classes at Boston College, my alma mater. While we discussed a broad range of topics in mobility, as true Eagles, we couldn't help but debate both sides of the iPhone 3G in the enterprise. Will Apple now "make it" in the enterprise?

If you read this blog with any sort of frequency or regularity, you might know that I am a rather content Windows Mobile user. I like the fact that it's so tightly integrated to my desktop environment and I also like the look and feel of my T-Mobile Dash (a.k.a HTC s620). That said, as an avid gadget freak, ahem, I mean enterprise mobility analyst, it's important for me to know what new devices are coming out in order to better understand trends in the industry.

Unlike most people who actually have social lives, I spent the majority of this past weekend in front of my computers trying to understand why my home WiFi network was all messed up. Although I had had everything working well for some time, my router decided to give me more than its usual headaches. The whole process in fact made me question where we stand with the 802.11n standard.

In the last 18 months, mobility has become one of the most exciting facets of the I.T. industry. That said, mobility is still a relatively new area for enterprise I.T. departments. Almost every day, new devices, applications, services and tools are driving opportunities for organizations to:
- Accelerate the speed at which they and their employees react to external events;
- Ensure that employees are able to address customer needs as quickly as possible;
- Ultimately fulfill mobility's promise of allowing individuals to be "productive" regardless of where they're located.

Although I am a self-proclaimed technology geek, I must admit that I don't think about enterprise mobility ALL the time. That said, I do always enjoy the opportunity to read articles on other topics and find inspiration regarding some of the key issues that might apply to enterprise mobility. I think John Dvorak at PC Magazine hit the jackpot in his latest article. One of the first statements of his latest column said:
"How do you really measure gains or losses in personal productivity? I would argue that you can't."
Let me think of the million and one ways this might apply to enterprise mobility.

What a busy 30 days it's been. I'm going to blame the following for my less than regular postings. A few week ago, I was on a panel at the Mobile Business Expo at Interop in New York City. The week after, I was moderating another panel at the Mobile Enterprise Executive Summit in Orlando. Ten days or so ago, I was at the Avaya conference where I learned about their 2008 strategy. Now, this past week, I attended NEC Unified's first ever industry analyst symposium. It's fascinating to see how two companies who compete in very similar spaces are taking such similar yet different approaches to the burgeoning market of unified communications and its role in enterprise mobility.
